Building a Stronger Community

Roanoke-Chowan Foundation was created originally as a public foundation, and in 1997 became an independent private foundation with a mission of meeting health and wellness needs of the Roanoke- Chowan communities in Bertie, Hertford, Gates and Northampton counties through an established grant making policy. Roanoke-Chowan Foundation is also the vehicle through which you can provide support for ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Since 1998, Roanoke-Chowan Foundation has granted more than $15.2 Million in more than 100 grants to community-based programs, including ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. The foundation also provides annual assistance with operational costs of ECU Health Wellness Center located in Ahoskie.

Our mission is to assist not-for-profit IRS-designated 501(c)(3) public charities or governmental entities primarily in the Roanoke-Chowan area (Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Northampton counties)to improve the health, wellness and general well-being of all people living in the region.

  The Foundation values innovative projects and ideas that will make a long-term positive difference for the people living in the Roanoke-Chowan area of eastern North Carolina. A healthy and well-educated population is in a better position to participate in activities which will enhance the enjoyment of life.

To achieve the mission and be true to the values of the Foundation, assistance will be considered in three areas of general interest:

1. Health education and illness prevention.
2. Educational opportunities at all levels related to healthcare (but not to individuals).
3. Community-based programs which address issues intended to demonstrate, motivate and encourage improvement in the health and general well-being of people living in the Roanoke-Chowan areas at all stages of life.
